Whole Group Lessons

With a large population of English Learners and students with special needs in my classroom, whole group lessons focused on mini-lessons with direct instruction of skills, vocabulary and language development, group collaboration and close readings of texts. I used GLAD and SDAIE strategies along with thinking maps as part of a UDL approach. I also created an Accelerated Reader incentive program in my classroom and have an extensive classroom library which helped grow student's love of reading.

This presentation shows a technology integrated whole group lesson I taught to my 3rd grade class using gradual release.
The two images in the gallery to the left depict weekly GLAD pictorials I would fill out with the 5th and 6th-grade students. Since the majority of the students at this school are English Learners, this was a strategy I utilized to teach new vocabulary and scaffold the weekly short story from the ELA Wonders curriculum.

Small Group Lessons

In my classes, there have been a diverse range of levels and student needs. After doing running record and Basic Phonics Skills Test, I addressed students' specific needs in small groups. I focused on making meaning of concepts through picture sorts and words students know. I also utilized the three cueing systems (semantic, syntactic, and graphophonic) through the use of three metacognitive questions depicted in the photo at right. I also created my own small group data tracking sheet and schedule when I would meet with small groups.
