Creativity Programs

Creativity and the arts are at the forefront of my passion for education. I believe creativity is an important 21st century skill that not only helps student engagement but is an essential attribute for success in our changing world. With low parental and community involvement at the school and no after school opportunities for creativity, I singlehandedly planned and put on my school's first talent show in years. Teachers reported students participating in the talent show demonstrated increased classroom engagement and excitement coming to school. As an educator, it allowed me to build meaningful relationships with students in other grades and classes while also sharing my stage production knowledge. In total, 30 students in grades 1-6 sang, danced, acted, and performed magic for the school.

With the help and encouragement of the Principal from my student teaching placement, I was able to start a Spirit Squad at the school. I taught students dances and cheers to be performed at school events. I communicated with parents effectively in order to start practices. I created and sent out the flyer above, along with permission slips I created for families. Since the majority of families at this school are Spanish-speaking, I sent home the permission slip in English and Spanish. The Principal helped me edit the Spanish version and I distributed it to participating students.
