Week 3

Learning Outcomes

Learning outcomes for this week focus on using the concepts they have learned thus far in the unit to effectively apply them in other subjects like science, math and writing. Students will be able to effectively apply the scientific method to make educated guesses as to the amounts of sugar in various foods and beverages. They will also be able to efficiently use math skills to add up measurements of healthy recipes. Specifically, they will be able to add and subtract fractions. When writing the magazine article, students will be able to practice using descriptive words and adjectives in their writing. They will also be able to use persuasive techniques by using evidence to convince their audience as to why their food is healthy.  The review and test at the end of the week will demonstrate student's understanding, comprehension, and retention of nurtition concepts from the Unit.

Teacher Suggestions

I suggest giving a detailed lecture on the scientific method before having the students complete the experiment. Go through each step in great detail, and show a complete example of using the scientific method in a different experiment. This will clarify the process for the students.

Next, I suggest also showing an example of a magazine article so that students understand how to write a magizine article before starting the group assignment.

For the math activity, I suggest teaching the students about all of the different types of cooking measurements before having them start the activity.  If students have not yet learned how to add or subtract fractions, I suggest changing the numbers to whole numbers. Using fractions and measurements they just learned might be too difficult for one assignment. Keep this in mind when creating the problems for your students.

I suggest playing a game like Jeopardy for the review session. Divide the room up into two teams and have them compete for a a prize (pencils/extra credit). This way students will be motivated to participate.

Finally, I suggest using a mixture of True/False, multiple choice, matching, and short essay questions on the test and using main concepts and vocabulary used in the Unit. A good short essay/short answer would be, "Describe the different foods that make up a healthy meal.  What makes these foods healthy?"
