An Interdisciplinary Unit on Childhood Obesity
Week 5
Learning Outcomes
Teacher Suggestions
The learning outcomes for the final week focuses on students synthesizing and demonstrating knowledge they have learned throughout the unit. Students will learn relaxation and breathing techniques in a yoga class as a stress-reducing tool. Watching a video on body image will show students the dangers of having poor body image. Participating in the activity where they write 5 things they like about themselves to be displayed around the room gives students self-confidence and good self-esteem. Performing in front of their peers will show the student's courage, and provides a way in which they can be proud of themselves. The final project will demonstrate students progress and work throughout the Unit. The reflection paper will demonstrate student's ability to reflect on what they have learned and write how they plan on applying it to their healthier lifestyle.
I suggest having a certified Yoga come in and teach a yoga class. Ask the instructor to focus on Yoga techniques that can be calming and stress reducing. After the class, ask the students how those techniques made them feel.
For the body image video, I suggest finding one that focuses on having a healthy sense of self. When doing the post viewing activity, tell the students thinking about the things they like about themselves is a good tool to do when you are feeling insecure about yourself.
For the "Move Your Body" performance, stress students having fun instead of worrying if they make a mistake. Tell students to smile and have fun. If you are comfortable with it, I suggest performing with your students to make them feel more comfortable and supported.
When grading the final project, grade on completeness, effort, and correctness in the work. This Unit was very reflective and therefore many assignments do not have a right or wrong answers.
