An Interdisciplinary Unit on Childhood Obesity
Week 4
Learning Outcomes
Teacher Suggestions
Learning outcomes for this week focus on being able to identify different types of exercise. By having the students write what exercise means to them, you will be able to judge student's current understanding of what exercise is, and the concepts of exercise. By reading the artcle on the effects of obesity, this will demonstrate student's reading comprehension. After reading the article, students will also be able to identify negative effects of obesity. By having the students participate in different types of exercise, they will be able to feel for themselves what body parts the different exercises work out. Students will then be able to identify exercises are associated with working out specific body parts. Practicing the "Move Your Body" dance will demonstrate student's retention of the dance so far. Writing why they think dance is a form of exercise in their journals demonstrates their ability to associate what they have learned about exercise to identify which body parts they feel are working out by dancing.
When having students write in their journals what they think exercise is, ask them to include types of exercise they have participated in, have seen on TV, or any other types of activities that makes them sweat. When discussing answers as a class, explain what aerobic exercise is and why that causes you to sweat. Since students have already wrote a lot for this unit, challenge them by requiring a page and a half to two page response.
For the article, create questions that ask students to identify main ideas, important concepts, and to define vocabulary discussed in the article. Feel free to choose a different article than the one posted on the "Students" tab.
During the physical exercise day, I suggest doing a lot of different types of exercise for a short amount of time. This way students will be able to experience a lot of different types of exercise and be able to identify which exercises work out different parts of the body. During each exercise, ask the students to call out parts of their body they feel are working out significantly and if it is an aerobic activity. I suggest playing a few different sports, running, stretching, lifting light weights, and one activity that is not exercise so students will be able to identify what is exercise and what is not.
For the "Move YOur Body" rehearsal, try to finish teaching the dance by today and put students in formations so they know where to stand on the stage when they dance. Put a student who has picked up the choreography very well in the front of the stage, and tell the other students to watch that student if they forget the dance during their performance.
When discussing the final project, provide an example for them to see. Create a list of all of the assignments students need to have in their final folder. Go over the reflective paper, and emphasize students writing what they have learned in the Unit.
